New research from Skyscanner today reveals destinations and routes that exceed 2019 levels.

Based on Skyscanner’s global flight data, it finds that travelers from Europe are driving demand for long-haul beach and sun destinations in 2022.

Mexico and the Maldives feature in more than half of the top 10 country pairs, looking at routes that top 2019 levels so far in 2022.

Both destinations attracted relatively large numbers of visitors in 2021, bucking the trend of slowing tourism.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the list thanks to a wave of travelers from the Netherlands.

Costa Rica, Egypt and the Dominican Republic also show annual growth of more than 100%.

In terms of itineraries, Cancun is the destination of choice for many European travelers, but British travelers favor Orlando and New York.

Globally, itineraries with booking horizons of 7-29 days currently account for a third of bookings on Skyscanner platforms, a +25% increase from 2019.

Some markets and routes are recovering well with demand exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to Skyscanner.

In Europe, a fifth of consumers currently plan their trips up to two months in advance, up 14% year-on-year.

Skyscanner expects medium and long-haul international travel to return in 2022, with demand returning as vaccination rates increase.
