A few months arouse the desire for a place brighter and warmer than the European vision of the January sun.

With the decorations down, the Christmas tree throwing its last needles into the street and the drizzle streaking the windows, the mental image of swaying palm trees and hissing waves is never more powerful.

Travel restrictions mean many of our long-haul favorites, like Thailand, are off-limits. Fortunately, the Caribbean is waiting to help you, dressed in their best high season clothes.

Here’s our roundup of places to go for the January sun. Be sure to check out the Department of Foreign Affairs advice for the latest rules regarding Covid testing and vaccination requirements.

Los Angeles

As the largest city in the United States (New York) battles winter at its peak, its second largest soaks up temperatures in the high 20s. In truth, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Los Angeles is so sunny in January – it is, after all, a metropolis with a golden climate all year round. But this lack of mystery in no way diminishes the possibilities for relaxing on the shores of LA – in Venice Beach, in Santa Monica or further afield in Malibu.

Lanzarote

“Lanza-grotty” was the dismissive nickname that was attached, in the 1980s, to the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. It was always an unreasonable insult – because while this sunny outcrop offers unfussy breaks in resort areas such as Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, it can also claim a growing range of luxury properties, seducing Spanish culture in the capital Arrecife, and volcanic majesty in the Timanfaya National Park.
