The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has started exhibiting the Maldives at India’s largest organized travel trade event.

The Maldives were exposed to OTM Mumbai, as a partner country.

MMPRC says it was to further boost the visibility of the Maldives brand in the Indian market.

The fair was held in Mumbai from March 14 to 16, 2022, at the Bombay Exhibition Center.

OTM, also called the gateway to India’s largest travel market, is one of the largest international gatherings of buyers and travel professionals in India. This event is an opportunity for the international travel industry to meet tourism professionals and build long-term business relationships around the world.

This year’s OTM event hosted over 1,100 exhibitors from 55 countries. The number of visitors is estimated to have reached over 30,000 for the three-day event.

MMPRC states that as a partner country, Maldives was entitled to visibility on both offline and online components. As such, the Maldives will be promoted as a favorite Indian holiday destination by highlighting tourism products and segments and experiences at strategic locations on the site.

The Maldives were represented by MMPRC on a designated stand at OTM 2022, with 18 co-exhibitors.

MMPRC says the main purpose of attending this event was to promote the Maldives as a safe haven for travelers and to update the Indian travel industry with the latest travel information and guidelines for the destination.

Throughout the event, MMPRC showcased the geographical advantages of the scattered islands of the Maldives. They pointed out that this allows for natural social distancing in the country, making the Maldives one of the safest destinations for tourists.

They also marketed Maldives resorts, hotels, guesthouses/homestays and cruise ships at the event.

MMPRC Managing Director, Thoyyib Mohamed, participated in a panel discussion held on the sidelines of OTM under the title “The Importance of Outgoing India in Post-Pandemic Market Recovery”.

Speaking at this roundtable, Thoyyib addressed the current market position and the continued efforts of MMPRC and industry stakeholders to maintain the Maldives as one of the preferred destinations for Indians.

MMPRC also received an award from One Above Agency, one of India’s leading travel agencies, in recognition of the company’s work in the Indian market. The award was titled “FRIEND OF INDIAN BROTHERHOOD OF OUTGOING TRAVELS”.

India has been the Maldives’ top source tourism market for two years. Thus, more than 278,740 Indian tourists visited the Maldives in 2021. That year, Indian tourists shared 22.6% of the Maldivian market. In 2020, the number of arrivals from India was 62,960. Which accounted for 11.3% market share that year.

A total of 31,433 Indian tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year.
