The South Island tops a list of the best places in the world to visit in 2022, beating Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

Classificationfor American readers, was compiled by Washington, DC-based publisher US News & World Report, which analyzed more than 1,100 destinations, taking into account user votes as well as contributions from experts and their own editors .

“New Zealand’s South Island is filled with majestic scenery at every turn, from dramatic mountains to dramatic fjords,” reads the blurb.

“Here you can admire the mountains of Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from hiking trails or from a boat on Milford Sound. At night, head to Mount John Observatory at the University of Canterbury to gaze up at the starry sky.

Paris was ranked second, followed by the Hawaiian island of Maui and the French Polynesian islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti.

London, Rome, Turks & Caicos, Tokyo and the Maldives complete the top 10.

“Beaches, national parks and small towns are popular travel destinations this year, with many big cities making a comeback.”

It is the second year in a row that Te Waipounamu has topped the US publisher’s list, although New Zealand was still closed to tourists when last year’s ranking was published.
