It’s the start of high season in many sunny European countries and if you’re like us, you’re ready for a holiday.

But, while Benidorm has reopened its beaches and Portugal and France continue to be popular, there are some stunning lesser-known spots.

And Italy has some of the most beautiful seaside towns and islands, including one that locals like to keep to themselves.

While Florence, Rome and Sicily are still popular, you might prefer to head to the small Mediterranean destination of Levanzo which will wow you with its tranquil beauty, historic sites and breathtaking sunsets.

The islands are small but beautiful

One of Italy’s best kept secrets, this beautiful hidden gem boasts crystal clear water, rocky countryside and quaint homes.

A big attraction on the island is the prehistoric rock drawings which can be accessed on a pre-booked guided tour.

The Grotta del Genovese shows human and animal figures painted on the walls around 13,000 years ago, reports MyLondon.

But photos of the caves are not allowed, so you’ll have to take a good look at them during your stay.

The tour will introduce you to the historical meanings behind the designs and on the island itself.

Levanzo is part of the Egadi Islands alongside Favignana and Marettimo.

It’s the smallest of the three with lots of charm, but has around 400 residents and therefore offers plenty of seclusion.

You can even explore all three islands by traveling on a ferry or boat between them.
